"Spelunk" is a three-movement saxophone quartet set in a cave. The work was written with the intention of giving the performers something fun to play. Each movement is based on material from the opening bar. In "Splice," the ensemble exchanges musical ideas to portray the journey to the cave's entrance, culminating in a held soprano saxophone note that leads into the second movement. "Glide" features smooth passing of ideas, evoking the exploration of the cavern. Finally, "Twist" depicts a turning point in the journey…
This work was selected as the winner of the 2025 Nexas Quartet Call for Scores where it was recorded then broadcast at 2MBS Fine Music Studios early January 2026.
